Found Photo

Did a little searching of the internet on my day off from the road, and I came across a photo of me from the Princeton/Stevens Race last weekend.
Pretty cool Hobart College leading the race!

Weekend.....

Due to an injury and size of the team it has been decided to not make the trip to Bucknell University this weekend. What this means, however, is that there will be a lot of time for riding and trying to get the group together finally. We have to take advantage of this weather!

I will be sending out an email to those who may be interested about a possible afternoon ride tomorrow or Sunday.

Stay Tuned!

ECCC Week 4: Princeton/Stevens Saturday Race Repot

This weekend marked the 2nd official race weekend for HWS Cycling. While it was ECCC week 4 dude to crappy weather and spring break we chose not to attend the past 2 weekends. Frank and I entered this race feeling great and in better form (Frank a little better than I). Here is the recap from Saturday March 27th which consisted of a Individual Time Trial (ITT) and a Criterium (Crit):

It started as an early morning, alarm off at 5:30 am and hopping in the car at 6 to make it down for the time for the ITT division D start around 7:45. I made it down and registered but was a little late and did not warm up the best, but regardless had to race. For those wondering, yes it was cold about 28 degrees at the start with a 5-8 mph wind which was a cross wind for most of the ITT. The course was a 4.3 mile course and I completed at a what i think was around 12:30 min. I felt good except for my fingers and for my first ITT it was a win in my book. I ended up in 25th place.

Frank was next, and he was late arriving, South Jersey is great for roads and getting lost and apparently Trenton swallowed Frank for an hour and he arrived just before his start, hopped on the start-line and competed finishing it at around 20th place (need to check the standings). It was a fun race for both of us, we then jumped in our cars and headed to the next venue for the Crit.

The Crit was held at Cadwalader Park in Trenton. It was a little over a mile course, with downhill s-curves and a uphill climb to the start finish line. This race was exciting. I started in the second row and was in the top 10 going through the s-curves at about 30 mph in the first lap. After these s-curves there was a little uphill where one could make a move if desired. Thinking to myself that I was not in as good of shape as I thought I wanted to get out in a breakaway and try to win some sprint points. I made a move, got in front and at the climb to the start finish I made a push to try to get people out in the break. This lead to me getting my 15 seconds of fame for HWS and I lead the first lap hopefully people took notice of our new team! It was around the s-curves and the little uphill on the backside of the course where I exchanged elbows with F&M and hoping to get into a break still I tried to convince people to go, only one guy went and I was blocked from joining him. I was then dropped on the 3rd lap and limped around to the finish. Gassed, but excited because I lead a lap and got a little more experience and realized that a 1 man team in your division is a very lonely place to be.

The B race was exciting to watch. It was very fast and fun. The division on dropped a few riders as well which lead to the excitement to the end. Frank kept great positioning throughout the race in the top 15 holding ground. 2 laps to go the riders started to crank it up. Frank said that the s-curves were fast and he was able on the 2nd to last lap make a move and position himself on the inside and up in the top 10 coming up on 1 to go. This is what I saw on the climb, Frank in the top 10 with 1 to go it was going to be an exciting finish. This was an understatement, but not in the good way. Final lap a break, and what do I see and hear? Crash! Only about 15 guys make it to the line and me and the other spectators look for our friends to finish and when Frank didn't I thought, "Crap! Be OK! Be OK!" I ran down the hill and saw some carnage. Frank was in the crash but alright. He was a little dinged up as he hurt his shoulder and got some gnarly road rash. A few kids were sent to the hospital and fingers crossed it was nothing major.

Cycling is a wild sport anything can happen and a field sprint taking out 1/2 the peloton is what happened here.

Next up: Decision on the Bucknell Race!

Workout of the Week

As a result of the inclement weather the past few days I have been left inside on the trainer yearning to get back out on the roads. My brother sent me a workout today to do on the trainer that absolutely kicked my ass. I recommend all to try this if you find yourself inside on the trainer on a rainy day.

20 minutes warmup, medium spin
10 sets of 30 seconds all out followed by 30 seconds of recovery spinning
30 minute cool down at a medium spin.

All should try this. It is going to be extremely painful but will be rewarding in the long run.

Its just an hour, it hurts, but you need to try it!

Getting Ready for Week 4

Well the past week was spring break, and because of a family trip, I was not able to make it to Philly this past weekend and Frank decided not to take the long trip also. With no place to stay and a long drive from home we chose to abstain (it sucks when your school isn't funding the team and you are running it out of your own pockets). I worked throughout the week on the slopes of Vail as well as at home with a few training rides to get myself ready for the weeks ahead. Frank also rode a lot this past week even competing in a Crit on Saturday where he helped a teammate take home the gold.

We are looking forward to this weekend events in Princeton, NJ where both members will be competing in the Individual Time Trials, Criteriums and Road Race this weekend. Training hard this week. With a possible night off to watch the Hobart v. Syracuse game last night (what a bummer of a loss). Stay tunned for more information about the weekend in the days to come!

Saturday Recap

So I thought I would give you all a little recap of this weekend. It was a final decision by Frank and I not to race today. While the Grant's Tomb Crit still was held, it was a decision to put a few more training hours on our bikes indoors today, rather than risk illness and injury on the streets of New York.

From what I was reading, it looked as though it was miserable. 40 degrees and 40 mph winds were the conditions today and I think we made the correct decision. From the results that I saw, UVM looked strong and congratulations to them. It was a successful day on the trainer for me getting in a good hour and a half and sweating it out watching some EPL games this morning.

I will be heading to Vail, CO tomorrow afternoon for a little high altitude training, haha, and look to get a few days of skiing in before coming home next week to prepare for the Philly weekend. I will keep you all posted if any one decides on training races or if anyone decides to participate at FDR Park tomorrow.

Hope Spring break is treating all of you well, and a bummer of news today that Hobart lost to Bucknell on the lacrosse field. Hopefully they will bounce back against Binghampton this week.

Please if you all have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to post! Stay posted for more news coming.
